600 RESTRICTED RULE CLARIFICATIONS

I have had several questions surrounding the 2011 600 Restricted Rule Changes and what is or is not legal.

The 600 restricted class is a stock motor class.  The only exception to this rule is that you may mill (clean-up) the head gasket surface and you may run any carbs or fuel injection.  You are also allowed to have a "valve job" but there is to be no blending of the bowls etc.

You can no longer run a 2-layer (thin) head gasket.  All head gaskets must be 3-layer oem equivalent head gaskets.

You can no longer degree your cams.  This means you cannot over-size the holes on the cam gears and roll your cams.  I've heard some mention that this can be done without any noticeable difference in the appearance however, this can easily be tech'd by removing just one of the cam gear bolts and measuring the diameter.  If you have altered your cam gears or cam timing you will be considered illegal and you will be disqualified.  Cams and Cam Gears must be stock!

Something to consider:  I'm not a motor expert but I've been told that removing material from the head or block, without being able to degree the cams, may have a negative effect on the performance of your motor in that when you are doing this you are essentially retarding the cam timing.   Because you can no longer degree your cams, you may end up inadvertently changing the cam timing in the wrong (retard vs advance) way.  I'd consult your motor builder before making a decision and if there is any expert advice out there please feel free to comment on this post.

I hope this answers a few of the questions that you have floating around out there.  If you have more, please feel free to ask.  If you don't want to ask the question on this post, send me a private message and I will respect your desire to remain anonymous and find you the answer.

Also, I believe we are going to have several new restricted racers this season and several returning drivers from last year.  I am definitely looking forward to watching  some great racing in this 600r class.  You guys/gals always put on a great show and in 2011 I think you have the potential to be a stand-out class at Deming.

Thanks,
Kelly
